Under Work Package 9, the Cross-country analysis, UA (Antwerp) will coordinate a comparative cross-country analysis on the various links of the theoretical framework. The work package will run from May to August 2012,
Research findings on the 16 regional cases (4 regions in each of the 4 countries) will be compared and common strands lifted out so as arrive at possible theoretical conclusions. This analysis will further enhance the understanding of the role of perceptions on human rights and democracy in shaping migration aspirations and decision-making. It will include assessing the way(s) in which macro, meso and micro factors influence the formation of migration aspirations and migration decisions.
The cross-country analysis will include 1) detailed data analysis and hypothesis-testing of the survey across the four countries and sixteen locations, 2) detailed qualitative data analysis relating empirical findings to the theoretical framework, and 3) triangulation of the various types of qualitative data. In addition, the findings of the human rights and democracy analysis of WP2 will be linked to survey and qualitative data results.
Comparisons between the four countries and between the different types of regions will be made both for the survey results and the qualitative data, with a special emphasis on thematic, transnational comparisons of the central hypotheses and related research questions, including gender issues. The transnational comparisons and a resulting higher level of abstraction and generalization will make it possible to refine the initial theoretical framework.
Project Paper 13 on Cross-country analysis and theoretical conclusions will be on the project website in 2012.
